OpenAI Unveils Plans for AI-Powered Health Assistant
10 Nov
Summary
- OpenAI exploring consumer health products, including AI-powered personal health assistant
- Tech giants' past failures in healthcare services
- Strategic hires for OpenAI's healthcare push

As of November 10, 2025, OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT AI, is reportedly considering a foray into the consumer health market. According to sources close to the company, OpenAI is exploring the development of various health-related products, including a generative AI-powered personal health assistant.
This move by OpenAI comes as a response to the limited success experienced by tech giants in the healthcare sector. Companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have long tried to give consumers more control over their medical data, but with limited success. Google shut down its health record service in 2011 due to low traction, while Amazon recently wound down its Halo fitness tracker business in 2023. Microsoft's HealthVault platform also failed to attract widespread adoption.
To bolster its healthcare strategy, OpenAI has made strategic hires in recent months. In June, the company brought on Nate Gross, the co-founder of the physician network Doximity, as the head of healthcare strategy. Additionally, former Instagram executive Ashley Alexander joined OpenAI as the vice president of health products in August.
At the HLTH conference in October, Gross revealed that ChatGPT, OpenAI's flagship product, attracts around 800 million weekly active users, many of whom are seeking medical advice. This user base presents a significant opportunity for OpenAI to leverage its generative AI capabilities and expand into the consumer health market.
