OpenAI Consolidates Apps Into One Superapp
20 Mar
Summary
- OpenAI is developing a single desktop application.
- The new app will merge ChatGPT, Codex, and Atlas.
- This consolidation aims to streamline products and avoid distractions.

OpenAI is consolidating its various product efforts into a single desktop "superapp." This new application is set to merge the functionalities of its ChatGPT, Codex AI coding tool, and Atlas browser into one streamlined platform.
The decision stems from a desire to simplify the company's product strategy, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. According to a memo cited by the publication, OpenAI CEO of Applications Fidji Simo stated that product fragmentation "has been slowing us down and making it harder to hit the quality bar we want."
This strategic refocusing comes as OpenAI faces increasing competition, notably from Anthropic following the popularity of Claude Code. Simo emphasized the importance of avoiding "side quests" and doubling down on successful ventures, indicating a phase of renewed concentration after a period of exploration that included announcements like the Sora video app and the acquisition of Jony Ive's AI hardware company. The mobile version of ChatGPT will remain unchanged. OpenAI has declined to comment on the development.
