OpenAI Eyes India: TCS Secures Land for First Data Centers

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has secured land parcels in Vizag and Pune, signaling potential locations for OpenAI's inaugural data facilities in India. The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated 200 acres to TCS in the Anakapalli district, an area also seeing development by Google. Concurrently, TCS finalized the purchase of an 88-acre land parcel in Pune for ₹640.50 crore.

TCS's chief executive, K Krithivasan, indicated that the company is in advanced talks with multiple hyperscalers and anticipates concluding definitive agreements this quarter. This strategic move positions TCS to capitalize on India's rapidly expanding AI sector, which is projected to grow significantly by 2030. The potential TCS-OpenAI collaboration aims to offer sovereign AI infrastructure for critical Indian industries.

This development follows other major AI-Indian firm alliances, including Google-Adani and Meta-Reliance. TCS is also navigating competition from other IT firms like HCLTech, Cognizant, and Accenture, all venturing into the data center business. OpenAI's Stargate project, a global initiative, views India as a key expansion territory, aligning with TCS's goal to become a premier AI-led services provider.
