The Data agent stems from an internal tool developed by OpenAI to address its own significant data querying challenges. This internal platform, detailed in January 2026, served over 3,500 users and managed vast datasets, highlighting the need for a generalized external solution. The agent orchestrates context across disparate tools, a key differentiator from simple data connectors.
