OpenAI's Coding AI Lag: Altman Admits Rival Lead

OpenAI, despite its pioneering work in AI, is not currently leading the AI coding revolution. A rival, Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees, has achieved significant success with its AI programming agent, Claude Code. This product now constitutes nearly 20% of Anthropic's business, generating an annualized revenue exceeding $2.5 billion as of February. In contrast, OpenAI's own AI coding tool, Codex, had an annualized revenue of just over $1 billion by the end of January.

Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, acknowledges that being first to market, as with ChatGPT, holds considerable value. However, he expressed confidence that OpenAI's AI models are now sufficiently advanced to power highly capable coding agents. Altman views the AI coding sector as a monumental opportunity, predicting it could become one of the rare multitrillion-dollar markets due to its immense economic potential and the broader opportunities it unlocks. He further suggested that developing advanced coding AI might represent the most probable route toward achieving artificial general intelligence, defined as an AI system surpassing human capabilities in most economically valuable tasks.
