Ex-xAI Chief Launches Open-Source AI for Everyone

A year after departing Elon Musk's xAI, Igor Babuschkin is championing a new vision for artificial intelligence: democratization. His new venture, River AI, aims to prevent any single company from dominating this transformative technology.

With $1 billion in funding, River AI plans to release its AI technologies as open-source software. This initiative allows businesses, developers, and consumers unrestricted use and modification of the technology, fostering individual control over AI.

Babuschkin intends to build computer servers enabling everyday users to operate AI locally. This approach ensures personal data privacy and allows users to customize AI behavior, moving away from corporate-dictated rules.

River AI, based in Palo Alto with about 20 employees, is months from its initial release. However, its team, many from xAI, OpenAI, and Tesla, strives to create adaptable AI systems that learn on the fly.

This open-source push comes as Chinese startups release powerful AI systems, outpacing some US companies. River AI and its investors, including Nvidia, aim to fill this gap, potentially offering an "American answer" to global AI development.

While companies like OpenAI and Anthropic argue for strict AI control due to safety concerns, critics fear this concentration of power. They believe open-source fosters faster innovation and provides essential tools for businesses, such as cyberattack defense.

Babuschkin, formerly of OpenAI and Google, emphasizes a fundamental shift from the current AI model. He believes the public prefers accessible, user-controlled AI over corporate dominance, advocating for a future where AI serves individual needs.
