Users can reportedly achieve lower per-token expenses by running these models on their own infrastructure, a move gaining traction due to both economic advantages and the need for greater control over data and operations.

While proprietary models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic offer convenience and a full-service package, their closed nature comes at a premium. Open-weight alternatives, however, are rapidly closing the performance gap, with some now only about four months behind the most advanced closed systems. This development allows companies and governments to diversify their AI strategies, routing tasks based on cost, risk, and performance requirements.

Economic factors are a major driver, with some Chinese open-weight models costing 60%-90% less than their proprietary counterparts. However, total costs can increase due to higher token consumption and infrastructure expenses. For governments, security and data control are paramount, raising concerns about the provenance and accessibility of models, especially those developed in China. This has led to discussions about potential restrictions on certain Chinese models in the United States and reciprocal measures from Beijing.

Western companies and nations are accelerating efforts to provide alternatives, with some seeking to build sovereign AI capabilities. This includes developing customized systems using open-source models and forming international collaborations. Despite the advantages, open-weight AI is unlikely to eliminate proprietary models entirely, but it is poised to significantly alter the market, reducing the reliance on major providers and potentially impacting their revenue growth.
