5 Jan
Summary
- Cybersecurity breach affected private health website.
- Roughly 6-7% of 1.8 million users may be compromised.
- Health Ministry reviewing protections and incident response.

New Zealand's Ministry of Health has launched a review into a cybersecurity breach that impacted the privately owned Manage My Health website. This platform is crucial for accessing medical records for a substantial portion of the country's population.
The incident, which occurred on December 30, has raised concerns as hackers gained unauthorized access. The website's operator, Manage My Health, confirmed that data from an estimated 6% to 7% of its 1.8 million registered users may have been compromised. The company asserts that the vulnerabilities allowing unauthorized access have since been rectified.
Minister of Health Simeon Brown stated that patient data, regardless of whether it is held by public or private entities, must be protected to the highest standards. The review aims to understand how the breach occurred, evaluate existing data protection measures, and recommend necessary improvements to prevent future incidents.
