New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has begun auctioning its final MetroCard vending machines, marking a significant step in its transition to the contactless OMNY payment system. A total of 60 machines are available, including the larger MetroCard Vending Machines (MVM) and smaller MetroCard Express Machines (MEM).
The MVMs, first installed in 1999, measure up to 80in long and weigh as much as 1,050lbs. The MEMs, introduced later, are smaller and lighter. All machines are sold in non-operational condition after their internal components were removed.
The auction is open until August 19. Successful bidders must pay in full and arrange for pickup within 10 days, responsible for all transportation. The MTA is also holding a sweepstakes for VIP access to its October transit memorabilia sale.
