Nvidia Drivers for SteamOS: A 2026 Wait?

Initial Nvidia driver support for SteamOS is not expected until late 2026, according to Valve's software engineering team. This development follows Nvidia's recent efforts to bolster its Linux support, including hiring specialized experts. Valve is collaborating directly with Nvidia to integrate better driver compatibility for SteamOS, which is increasingly used with devices like the Steam Deck.

Historically, Nvidia's proprietary drivers for Linux have been a point of contention, often causing issues across various distributions. While Nvidia appears to be increasing its official Linux support, Valve acknowledges that bringing seamless functionality to Nvidia-powered hardware through SteamOS remains a significant undertaking. The company is working on this in the background, with initial driver support anticipated in the coming years.
