Nvidia's Liquid-Cooled Data Centers Slash Water Use
23 Jun
Summary
- Nvidia's new design drastically cuts data center power and water usage.
- Servers now tolerate higher temperatures, up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit.
- The system achieves up to 100% reduction in water consumption.

Public concerns regarding the substantial water and energy footprints of data centers are being addressed by Nvidia's latest innovation. The company's Rubin generation reference design for fully liquid-cooled data centers reportedly eliminates massive amounts of power and water usage.
This efficiency is partly achieved by enabling AI servers to operate at higher temperatures, as high as 113 degrees Fahrenheit (45 degrees Celsius). Nvidia's system captures heat directly at the chip, transporting it through liquid loops. This allows outdoor dry coolers to reject heat efficiently, offering greater flexibility with ambient air temperatures.
Nvidia claims this design can reduce water use from approximately 2.6 million gallons per megawatt annually for conventional systems to near zero, representing a 100 percent reduction. While this addresses water and energy concerns, it does not cover all environmental impacts, such as construction or power generation.
