Summary
- Nvidia is seeking an architect for orbital data center systems.
- The company aims to develop AI products for use in space.
- CEO Jensen Huang acknowledged the potential of space-based data centers.

Nvidia is actively exploring the development of space-based data centers. The technology giant is currently seeking an "Orbital Datacenter System Architect" to help design and build products for artificial intelligence applications in orbit. This role involves defining the architecture for orbital data centers, considering everything from the chips to satellite connectivity.
Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, has indicated that while the economics are currently challenging, the prospect of space-based data centers is expected to improve over time. He mentioned that an Nvidia H100 GPU was successfully sent into Earth's orbit last year for testing purposes. This initiative aligns with SpaceX's extensive plans to establish orbital data centers, potentially utilizing up to one million satellites.
Other companies, including Google, are also investigating the concept of orbital data centers, albeit with more research-oriented, prototype projects. The challenges for these ventures include cooling hardware in space and protecting it from cosmic radiation, alongside significant environmental and space safety concerns raised by critics.
