Nvidia App Frees Up PC Games: Compile Shaders While You Sleep!
2 Apr
Summary
- New Nvidia App beta compiles shaders automatically during idle time.
- Feature reduces in-game shader compilation after driver updates.
- Users can manually set aside disk space and control resource usage.

The latest beta version of the Nvidia App offers PC gamers a solution to lengthy shader compilation times. Its new Auto Shader Compilation feature allows the machine to rebuild DirectX drivers for games automatically while the PC is idle. This aims to reduce the occurrence of game runtime compilation following driver updates.
Activated through the Graphics Tab, users can allocate disk space and system resources for shader compilation. Although initial shader generation for new titles remains an in-game process, this automated system streamlines the experience after subsequent driver updates.
This feature is distinct from Microsoft's Advanced Shader Delivery, which developers can utilize for pre-downloaded shader databases. Nvidia is reportedly working with Microsoft to integrate this support for its GeForce RTX line later this year. Intel is also rolling out a similar precompiled shader delivery system.
