New AI Code Model Runs Locally, Saves Costs
10 Jun
Summary
- New open-source AI model for coding runs on a single H100.
- Supports a massive 256,000 token context window for large projects.
- Offers a cost-effective, locally deployable alternative to managed models.

Engineering teams building agentic coding pipelines now have a new open-source option: Cohere's North Mini Code. This model, launched recently, operates on a single H100 and boasts a 30 billion parameter mixture-of-experts architecture. It is specifically designed for agentic software engineering, including sub-agent orchestration, architecture mapping, code review, and terminal tasks.
North Mini Code features a substantial 256,000 token context window and a 64,000 token maximum generation length. Its training involved multiple stages, including supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning across diverse agent scaffolds, aiming for robust performance in various terminal environments. This contrasts with managed models like Claude Fable 5, offering a locally deployable and potentially more cost-effective solution.
The model's sparse MoE design allows for efficient inference, with compute requirements closer to a 3 billion parameter model. While offering significant output throughput and a faster time to first token compared to some competitors, its verbosity can increase inference costs in high-volume production workloads. This release presents a clear tradeoff between cost control and data residency versus managed infrastructure overhead for enterprises.
