Mysterious Cyberattack Hits North Korean State Websites
23 Oct
Summary
- A cyberattack likely caused North Korea's recent internet outages.
- Outages affected over 40 official .kp domain websites.
- Analysis points to a Distributed Denial-of-Service attack.

North Korea's internet experienced intermittent outages over a 32-hour period that began on Tuesday. Analysis by US network monitoring company Kentik suggests a cyberattack, likely a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, caused the disruptions.
Multiple waves of traffic were observed originating from locations such as Vietnam and Venezuela during the outages. These disruptions affected more than 40 official state-managed websites using the .kp domain, including key government sites and the state news agency KCNA.
While the exact perpetrators remain unidentified, this incident is reminiscent of past network paralysis. In late 2014, North Korea faced a complete internet outage following controversies surrounding a film about its leader, Kim Jong Un.
