Nintendo Switch 2 Faces Sales Slowdown
9 Jan
Summary
- Switch 2 Christmas sales declined 35% vs. original Switch in 2017.
- UK Switch 2 sales were down 16% in eight weeks compared to launch.
- A complex economic climate and lack of major Western games cited.

The Nintendo Switch 2, despite a strong launch in June 2025, saw its first Christmas sales fall below expectations. Globally, Christmas sales were down 35% when compared to the original Switch's performance in the same period of 2017. This trend was also observed in the UK, where the new console's sales were 16% lower in the last eight weeks of 2025 compared to its predecessor.
A Nintendo employee described the situation as a result of a "complicated economic landscape," suggesting that higher prices for hardware and software may have deterred more casual gamers. The absence of a major Western game with broad market appeal was also noted as a factor.
While the Switch 2 did receive notable titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Donkey Kong Bananza, the year concluded without a major exclusive like a 3D Mario or Animal Crossing title. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was released but is not considered a mass-market pull.
