Sony and Nintendo once explored a groundbreaking collaboration to merge Sony's CD-ROM technology with Nintendo's cartridge-based Super NES. This partnership envisioned a hybrid console, codenamed the Nintendo PlayStation, capable of playing both formats. However, the collaboration dissolved early on when Nintendo decided to pursue a different path with Philips.
Following the breakup, Sony independently developed its own console, the PlayStation, which achieved immense success. The brief but significant Nintendo PlayStation project is now remembered as a fascinating alternate reality in video game history. A rare development kit for this unreleased console, codenamed MSF-1, has been acquired by the National Video Museum in Texas. This artifact is believed to be the oldest and possibly only existing prototype of the console that never materialized.
