Qualcomm is set to enhance budget smartphones with its new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and 4 Gen 5 processors. These 4nm chips are designed to integrate flagship-level capabilities into midrange and entry-level devices, aiming to improve affordability in a challenging component market.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 processor brings advanced features to phones expected to cost under $500. It boasts a 100x software-enhanced zoom, AI-enhanced night vision, and support for up to 200MP photos and 4K HDR video. Connectivity is also boosted with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 support, offering future-proofing and improved audio experiences. This chip also promises enhanced battery life and supports displays up to 144Hz with Quick Charge 5.
For devices under $300, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 focuses on delivering 5G connectivity and gaming performance. It offers a significant GPU performance improvement over its predecessor, supporting 90fps gameplay, a feature previously reserved for more expensive models. Additionally, it introduces Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) capability to the sub-$300 segment, allowing two 5G lines to be active simultaneously. Initial releases of phones with the 4 Gen 5 chip are expected from overseas manufacturers like Oppo and Xiaomi.
