NEG Unveils Advanced UV-Blocking Glass for Space
6 Oct
Summary
- NEG developed new BDX-3 glass for space applications.
- BDX-3 offers enhanced UV shielding and reduced discoloration.
- The glass is suitable for LEO, MEO, and high Earth orbit.
Nippon Electric Glass (NEG) has introduced BDX-3, a new Starveil™ ultra-thin cover glass engineered for the rigorous demands of space applications. This advanced material is designed to combat radiation-induced discoloration, a common issue for equipment operating in space. BDX-3 also boasts improved ultraviolet (UV) shielding performance, offering enhanced protection against harmful UV rays.
While primarily intended for low Earth orbit (LEO) missions, BDX-3's capabilities extend to medium Earth orbit (MEO) and high Earth orbit environments. This makes it a versatile solution for a wide array of satellites and spaceborne equipment, ensuring maintained optical performance and durability across different orbital altitudes. Samples are now available, with NEG aiming for widespread commercial adoption.
