Australia's Internet Gets a Turbo-Boost
14 Sep
Summary
- NBN speeds increased significantly one year after 'Accelerate Great' program.
- Network performance remained stable despite massive speed upgrades.
- Customer equipment now a bottleneck for faster NBN speeds.

One year after its launch on September 14, 2025, NBN Co's 'Accelerate Great' program has successfully boosted internet speeds for millions of Australians. The program dramatically increased download speeds across several tiers. NBN 100, for example, saw a fivefold increase to 500Mbps, while NBN 250 jumped to 750Mbps. A new multi-gigabit tier, Home Hyperfast, was also introduced.
The fixed-line NBN network proved capable of handling these substantial speed increases. Testing by the ACCC indicated that services generally delivered close to their advertised speeds, even during peak hours. Network reliability remained consistent, with no significant increase in outages.
While the NBN infrastructure performed well, a growing number of services are now classified as underperforming. This issue is increasingly linked to customer-side equipment, such as older routers or internal cabling, which may not support the new higher speeds. NBN Co's 'Accelerate Great' program represents a significant upgrade, shifting the bottleneck from the network to home equipment for some users.
The success of 'Accelerate Great' encourages eligible users with FTTP or HFC connections to consider upgrading. The substantial increase in bandwidth offers significant benefits for households with multiple users engaging in activities like streaming, gaming, and remote work, making faster NBN plans increasingly relevant.
