Musk's Grokipedia Fails to Dethrone Wikipedia After Rapid Traffic Decline
14 Nov
Summary
- Grokipedia traffic plummets over 90% from launch peak
- Grokipedia criticized for copied content and misinformation
- Musk plans to rebrand Grokipedia as "Encyclopedia Galactica"

In November 2025, Elon Musk launched a new online encyclopedia called Grokipedia, aiming to take on the long-standing Wikipedia. However, the new site has faced significant challenges in attracting and retaining users, according to recent data from internet traffic monitor Similarweb.
Grokipedia saw a surge in traffic during its initial launch, peaking at over 460,000 web visits in the US on October 28th from both desktop and mobile users. But since then, the site's visits have taken a sharp dive, with Similarweb now estimating around 30,000 visits per day - a more than 90% drop from the peak.
The numbers indicate that Grokipedia is struggling to gain a foothold against the established Wikipedia, which Similarweb currently ranks as the ninth-most visited site in the world. In contrast, Musk's own X/Twitter platform comes in at sixth.
Grokipedia has faced criticism for its reliance on AI to generate articles, in contrast to Wikipedia's human community of volunteer editors. The site's initial 0.1 version was found to host numerous articles that appeared to be copied from Wikipedia, leading to concerns about plagiarism and misinformation.
Despite the early setbacks, Musk and his startup, xAI, have been working to improve Grokipedia, including adding a function to review the edit history of articles. Musk has also revealed plans to eventually rebrand the site as "Encyclopedia Galactica," describing it as an "open-source distillation of all knowledge, including audio, images and video." However, the road ahead remains long as Grokipedia continues to struggle to gain traction against the dominant Wikipedia.
