Musk: AI Robots to Replace Surgeons in 3 Years

Elon Musk, founder of xAI, SpaceX, and Tesla, has predicted that AI-powered humanoid robots will perform surgeries, rendering medical schools obsolete within three years. He stated that everyone will have access to medical care superior to what the US President currently receives, with advanced automation ensuring precise surgeries at a fraction of the cost. Robotic-assisted surgery is already in use globally via systems like Intuitive Surgical's Da Vinci, though these require human control.

Despite advancements in AI for drug discovery and early diagnosis, many medical professionals are skeptical of Musk's timeline. Surgeons, including Dr. Mohan Keshavamurthy and Dr. Bharat Mody, argue that AI cannot replicate the complex decision-making, intuition, and adaptability required in delicate surgical procedures. They acknowledge AI's growing role in diagnostics and routine cognitive tasks, which may reduce the need for medical school, but reject the notion of doctors becoming obsolete.

Experts like bioethicist Arthur Caplan and Dr. Eric Topol also question Musk's prediction. Caplan dismissed the three-year timeline as "not credible," emphasizing that surgery can be an art form requiring extensive comparative trials to prove AI equivalence. Dr. Topol suggests AI's true value lies in freeing up doctors to focus on patient interaction, enhancing the "human touch" rather than replacing it.
