AI to Break India's Language Barriers in Healthcare

Amitabh Nag, CEO of Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD), emphasized that language AI is essential to ensure that language does not impede access to vital health services. This technology can enhance citizen engagement, grievance redressal, and the overall accessibility of digital public health platforms.
During an event in Bhubaneswar, a significant MoU was signed between the National Health Authority (NHA) and DIBD. This agreement aims to implement multilingual translation and AI-powered language support across NHA's digital health platforms, including Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
The adoption of AI in digital health systems is a natural progression as these systems scale nationwide. AI-enabled tools such as voice-to-text and natural language processing are expected to alleviate time pressures on doctors. They will facilitate seamless patient-doctor interactions and enable automatic creation of electronic health records, thereby boosting efficiency and strengthening digital health infrastructure.
