MSI Power Connectors Slipping: A Shocking GPU Risk
26 Feb
Summary
- MSI's yellow 12V-2x6 connectors may not prevent power shorts.
- Connectors have been observed slowly slipping out of GPUs.
- MSI is reportedly issuing refunds for affected PSUs.

Newer MSI power supplies, featuring distinctive yellow 12V-2x6 connectors, were introduced to mitigate power delivery problems with high-end graphics cards. These connectors aimed to ensure proper seating and prevent short circuits or cable melt.
However, reports have emerged on social media indicating these yellow connectors are not a foolproof solution. Users have observed the connectors gradually dislodging from both GPUs and power supply units, raising concerns about long-term stability.
This issue appears to affect specific RTX 50-series graphics cards, including the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090, in conjunction with several MSI power supply models. Some users speculate that thermal expansion and contraction could be contributing factors to the slippage.
MSI is reportedly aware of the problem and is addressing it on a case-by-case basis. At least one customer has received a full refund for their power supply unit, although they had already sourced an alternative from a different manufacturer.
