Augmental Technologies has unveiled the MouthPad, a groundbreaking hands-free touchpad designed to be worn inside the mouth. This custom-fitted device allows users to control computers, smartphones, and tablets using their tongue or head movements, effectively turning the mouth into a new input method.

The MouthPad functions like a pressure-sensitive touchpad placed on the roof of the mouth. Users can move the cursor with their tongue and perform clicks with tongue presses. A sip gesture can trigger a right-click, and the device also supports scrolling and swiping, connecting wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Compatibility is a key feature, with support for macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. A companion app allows for customization of cursor speed, touch sensitivity, and click strength, with preferences stored on the device itself for easy switching between multiple paired devices.

Augmental developed MouthPad to enhance accessibility, working with hundreds of users with diverse abilities. The company states users can speak normally with the device in place, though adjustment time may vary. Early users have worn it for up to 10 hours daily, with comfort dependent on individual mouth shape and usage.

Battery life is rated at over seven hours of continuous use, with charging taking approximately 1.5 hours via a provided case. A crucial step for users is obtaining a dental scan, which costs between $50 and $150, before Augmental manufactures the custom-fit device, typically shipping about six months after scan receipt.

The MouthPad costs $1,400 for a single unit, with a two-device package available for $1,900. The dental scan cost is separate, and insurance, FSA, or HSA funds are not currently covered. Augmental initially ships only to the United States but notes the device is not geo-restricted.

This technology represents a significant step in accessibility, offering a new pathway to digital independence for individuals with limited hand mobility.
