Summary
- Moonshot is seeking a $10 billion valuation for its funding round.
- Existing backers like Alibaba and Tencent are increasing their investment.
- Moonshot's Kimi K2.5 model leads rivals in performance benchmarks.

Moonshot, a Chinese artificial intelligence startup, is reportedly seeking a $10 billion valuation in an expansion of its current funding round. This move comes shortly after securing $500 million at a $4.3 billion valuation just a month prior. Existing investors, including tech giants Alibaba and Tencent, have already committed over $700 million to the initial tranche of this new round, signaling strong confidence.
The company's Kimi chatbot has gained significant traction, with its latest iteration, Kimi K2.5, demonstrating competitive performance. It currently ranks among the most-used large language models on the OpenRouter platform and is second only to a rival's model on the Artificial Analysis site for open-source models.
Founded by former Tsinghua University professor Yang Zhilin, Moonshot aims to challenge Silicon Valley's dominance in AI. While it offers subscription plans and enterprise solutions, it trails competitors like Zhipu and Minimax in commercialization. Despite this, Moonshot reported substantial growth in paying users, both domestically and internationally, and holds significant cash reserves, indicating it is not currently prioritizing an IPO.
