Neurotechnology Breakthrough: MIT Scientist Develops Mind-Controlled Soccer Ball
14 Nov, 2025
Summary
- MIT researcher creates brain-computer interface glasses
- Glasses allow user to control a soccer ball with their mind
- Concerns raised about potential misuse of neural data and neurotechnology

As of November 2025, researchers at the MIT Media Lab have made a breakthrough in neurotechnology. Nataliya Kosmyna, a visiting research scientist at Google, has designed a pair of glasses that can translate brain activity into physical movement.
During a recent demonstration, Kosmyna handed the glasses to a participant and asked them to perform "basic mental calculus." Within seconds, a small robotic soccer ball on the table began to light up and spin around, seemingly controlled by the sheer force of the participant's mind.
Kosmyna's glasses are a simple brain-computer interface (BCI), a conduit between the human mind and machines. As the participant's brain activity increased, sensors in the glasses detected heightened electrical signals, triggering the ball to move. When the participant's attention waned, the ball stood still.
While the technology is currently limited to research purposes, Kosmyna has received multiple purchase requests for the glasses. She remains hesitant to commercialize them, aware of the potential for misuse. Neural data can provide unprecedented insight into the human mind, and BCIs are already being used to decode speech, recreate mental images, and even detect emotions and political ideology.
Advances in neurotechnology raise significant ethical concerns. As the industry continues to grow, expected to double or triple in size over the next decade, experts warn of the risks of unfettered access to neural data and the possibility of it being weaponized for political purposes. Several nations and states have already passed laws to protect "neurorights" and neural privacy, but more regulation may be needed to ensure the responsible development of these powerful technologies.
