Spa Scans: Midjourney's AI Enters Medical Tech

Midjourney, a company renowned for AI-generated images, is establishing a new division, Midjourney Medical, to develop a novel body scanning technology. This innovative system aims to provide faster, more affordable, and easily accessible full-body scans.

The technology utilizes a water-based ultrasound approach, described as "Ultrasonic CT." Users would stand on a platform that slowly lowers them through a pool of water, passing through a ring of sensors that emit and receive sound waves. This process, requiring significant computing power, aims to generate a 3D map of the body's internal structures.

Initially, the scanner will focus on body composition, detailing muscle and fat. Diagnostic medical applications would require future regulatory clearance. Midjourney envisions this technology as a spa-like experience, with its first "Midjourney Spa" slated for San Francisco in late 2027.

The spa concept, featuring elements like hot tubs and saunas, intends to make imaging less stressful than traditional hospital settings. While Midjourney compares its potential imagery to MRIs, it emphasizes that for now, it's a wellness tool, not a replacement for diagnostic medical imaging.

Crucially, the company plans to seek FDA clearance for advanced capabilities, acknowledging the rigorous standards for medical imaging.
