Microsoft's Workplace Check-in feature, intended to help colleagues coordinate by updating work location, is slated for release in June 2026. This functionality, an extension of existing check-in options, will detect when a user's device connects to their company's office Wi-Fi. The feature's launch has been postponed multiple times since late 2025, with the current roadmap confirming the upcoming rollout.
Despite Microsoft's assurances that Workplace Check-in does not track precise movements and remains disabled by default, employee representatives and data protection advocates have voiced concerns. They fear the feature could be exploited for workplace monitoring, especially as many organizations are currently encouraging or mandating a return to the office. Tenant administrators will control its activation, and individual users retain the choice to share their location data.
