WMIC Command-Line Tool Deprecated by Microsoft
18 Aug
Summary
- WMIC, a command-line utility for system information, is being removed.
- New Windows 11 installations already exclude the deprecated WMIC tool.
- Existing Windows PCs will lose WMIC after the upcoming update.

Microsoft has announced the removal of the WMIC command-line utility via release notes for upcoming Windows preview builds. This marks the complete phase-out of a tool that was classified as deprecated in 2024.
New installations of Windows 11 have already omitted WMIC. The latest update, however, will ensure that even existing Windows PCs will no longer have the wmic.exe executable file installed.
WMIC served as a command-line tool for retrieving system information and automating administrative tasks. Users could access hardware data or BIOS details through commands.
The underlying Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) remains fully supported and unaffected by this change. Most home users are unlikely to notice the removal as they typically do not use WMIC.
However, users and administrators employing older management or automation scripts that depend directly on WMIC commands may encounter issues. These scripts will stop working once the update is installed.
