Summary
- Microsoft's revenue and profit exceeded analyst expectations.
- Azure cloud division experienced a significant 48% growth.
- Company is heavily investing in AI, offering buyouts to employees.
Microsoft's stock saw a notable increase on Wednesday after the company announced financial results exceeding analyst predictions for the September quarter. Revenue reached $92.3 billion and profit surpassed $36.6 billion, significantly outperforming expectations.
The primary driver for this growth was the Azure cloud computing division, which achieved an impressive 48% expansion during the quarter. CEO Satya Nadella highlighted enhanced capabilities, choices, and cost efficiencies for customers across Microsoft's technology stack.
In parallel with its strong financial performance, Microsoft is strategically channeling substantial resources into artificial intelligence development. This includes offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees, representing about a quarter of its global workforce, as part of its AI investment strategy.
The company's capital expenditures have also escalated, nearly doubling to $39 billion compared to the same period last year, with a significant portion allocated to AI-related hardware such as memory chips and storage. Microsoft anticipates further increased capital spending in the final quarter of 2026, projecting over $50 billion.
Microsoft continues its competition in the cloud computing market against giants like Amazon Web Services and Google's parent company, Alphabet. While AWS remains the market leader, Microsoft holds the second position, with Google closely following. Both companies are heavily investing in AI infrastructure, with Alphabet and Meta recently raising substantial funds through equity offerings to support their AI ambitions.
