Microsoft Plans 3x Data Center Boost for AI
28 Sep
Summary
- Microsoft aims to triple data center capacity to 38 gigawatts by 2032.
- AI chip capacity is expected to grow to one-third of total capacity by 2032.
- Massive capital expenditures, over $175 billion, are required for expansion.

Microsoft Corporation is planning a substantial expansion of its global data center footprint, targeting an increase from its current roughly 12 gigawatts to over 38 gigawatts by 2032. This ambitious plan, reportedly cited by people familiar with the matter, aims to more than triple its existing capacity.
The surge in demand for cloud services, with Azure revenue increasing 43% year-over-year in fiscal Q4, underpins this expansion. Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion for the quarter and $214.4 billion for fiscal 2026. A significant portion of the new capacity will be dedicated to AI workloads, with the company expecting AI-specific chip capacity to grow to approximately one-third of the total 38-gigawatt capacity by 2032.
This aggressive infrastructure growth is supported by a substantial contracted backlog, with commercial remaining performance obligations rising 84% year-over-year to $678 billion. Microsoft has demonstrated an ability to add capacity rapidly, securing long-term power agreements, including a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy for electricity from the Three Mile Island Unit 1.
However, the expansion necessitates enormous capital commitments. Microsoft anticipates capital expenditures exceeding $50 billion in fiscal Q1 2027 and approximately $175 billion under its broader definition for calendar 2026. This significant investment could continue to impact free cash flow, despite the company's strong revenue visibility from its backlog.
