Micro Center's flagship Columbus store has been redesigned to foster a more engaging, hands-on technology experience for shoppers. This renovation, following a similar effort in New Jersey, shifts focus from merely selling the latest hardware to encouraging creative exploration with technology.
The redesigned store, located near the company's headquarters, features a prominent "Knowledge Bar" designed as the "heart of the store." Here, customers can receive tech help, have experts assemble custom computer components, or participate in the "Build and Learn" program for guided device assembly.
Central to the new layout is a DIY section with easily assembled robots and an expanded array of 3D printers, ranging from large, $2,500 models to more affordable options. This area also offers extensive filament supplies and material samples, akin to a hardware store's paint swatch section.
The store now showcases a wider variety of creative technology, including sections for customizing keyboards with unique keycaps, microphones and ring lights for content creators, and collectible trading cards and Lego kits. This arrangement emphasizes technology as a tool for personal expression and making.
Further enhancing the hands-on approach, Micro Center has introduced a dedicated area for local AI hardware. This allows customers to purchase powerful systems, such as the $4,500 Nvidia DGX Spark with 128GB of memory, for running large language models and generative AI applications independently, avoiding subscription fees and data privacy concerns.
The overall atmosphere aims to inspire customers by showcasing the creative potential of technology. Beyond just new graphics cards or TVs, the store encourages shoppers to consider what they can build and personalize with their purchases, offering a tangible alternative to online shopping.
