Meta Bets Big on Camera-Free Smart Glasses

Meta is expanding its smart glasses lineup with new audio-only models, distinct from their camera-equipped predecessors. These Ray-Ban Meta Audio Glasses, launched around Meta Connect 2026, feature Meta AI integration without any cameras, addressing public concerns about wearable surveillance. Alex Himel, Meta's VP of wearables, stated that audio was identified as the top use case for AI in glasses, driving the development of these lighter and more design-flexible devices.

The audio-only glasses start at $349, are lighter than previous generations, and offer an estimated 12-hour battery life. Functionality includes interacting with Meta AI, taking calls, and listening to audio content, with no recording capabilities. This release coincides with the company also updating its camera-equipped third-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which now feature enhanced microphones and Dolby Atmos sound, starting at $449.

Meta is also leveraging celebrity collaborations, with new versions featuring Kylie Jenner and Blackpink's Lisa, aiming to appeal to a wider demographic, particularly women. The company plans to offer over 100 versions of its smart glasses by the end of 2026, integrating its personal AI agent, Muse, across all devices. Additionally, a new FDA-cleared hearing assistance feature will be available for an extra $149.

Privacy updates include a "private processing" pipeline for data protection and an opt-out option for visual data used in AI training, though audio-only queries remain in training data. These measures aim to enhance user trust as Meta pushes towards the next era of mobile computing with its diverse range of smart glasses.
