Meta Powers Data Centers With Space Solar
3 May
Summary
- Space solar satellites beam constant sunlight energy from orbit.
- Existing solar farms will convert beamed energy to electricity.
- Meta partners with Noon Energy for over 100-hour energy storage.

Meta is forging ahead with innovative energy solutions by partnering with Overview Energy to harness space-based solar power for its data centers.
This pioneering technology involves satellites positioned in geosynchronous orbit, approximately 22,000 miles above Earth, where they continuously capture solar energy. This energy is then transmitted wirelessly to ground-based solar facilities as low-intensity near-infrared light. Existing solar farms can convert this beamed energy into electricity, allowing them to generate power 24/7 without interruption.
Meta has secured a significant capacity reservation of up to 1GW for this orbit-to-grid energy. An initial orbital demonstration is slated for 2028, with potential commercial delivery to the U.S. grid as early as 2030, provided the technology proves successful and scalable.
In parallel, Meta is addressing grid stability needs through a collaboration with Noon Energy. This partnership focuses on ultra-long-duration energy storage systems capable of providing over 100 hours of power, far exceeding the capabilities of current lithium-ion batteries. These advancements underscore Meta's commitment to securing vast amounts of clean energy.
