Meta Glasses Footage Exposed Workers to Disturbing Content
2 May
Summary
- Contract workers reviewed sensitive footage from Meta's smart glasses.
- Disturbing content included videos of people undressing and sexual acts.
- Over 1,000 workers were laid off after Meta ended its contract with Sama.

Contract workers in Kenya were exposed to disturbing and personal footage captured by Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, according to a recent investigation. The material included videos of individuals using the bathroom, dressing, and engaging in sexual acts. These workers were employed by Sama and tasked with labeling data to improve AI systems.
In an effort to address the issue, Meta ended its contract with Sama in April. This decision led to the layoff of more than 1,000 Kenyan workers, who were given only six days' notice. While Meta stated it ended the contract because Sama did not meet its standards, the company blamed Sama for the situation.
Oversight Lab, an organization advocating for tech workers' rights, reported that the laid-off contractors received minimal notice. The organization is assisting these workers in exploring their legal options following the job terminations.
