Meta is actively testing a new AI shopping assistant, signaling its entry into a rapidly expanding e-commerce sector. This feature aims to rival existing AI tools from OpenAI and Google by offering users a more integrated shopping discovery experience.
The AI assistant, initially available to select U.S. Meta AI users, will present product recommendations in a carousel format. It will include crucial information such as pricing, brand details, and direct links to purchase items from external merchants. Each recommendation will also come with a brief explanation of why the AI suggests that particular product.
This move by Meta occurs as the AI shopping assistant market is poised for substantial growth. Projections indicate the market will surge from $3.36 billion in 2024 to an impressive $28.54 billion by 2033, with an annual growth rate approaching 27%. Currently, North America holds a significant 40% share of this global market.
However, the adoption of AI shopping tools faces challenges, including consumer trust. A recent survey revealed that nearly two-thirds of consumers anticipate biased recommendations from AI-powered shopping assistants. Building and maintaining customer trust remains a critical hurdle for companies entering this space.
