Meta Bans 'Creepy' Glasses Use for Secret Videos
24 Jul
Summary
- Meta is banning users for filming people secretly with its glasses.
- Instagram head stated harassment and secret filming is unacceptable.
- New software disables cameras if recording lights are tampered with.

Meta has begun banning Instagram users who utilize the company's smart glasses for surreptitious video recording of others. This policy targets content creators who exploit individuals, particularly those making "pickup line" videos or filming public interactions without consent. Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, recently stated that such content, often bordering on harassment, will result in takedowns and account deactivations.
The company has observed a rise in videos filmed with smart glasses where individuals are unaware they are being recorded, leading to the devices being infamously called "pervert glasses." To combat this, Meta has introduced software that disables the camera if the recording LED indicator light is tampered with. However, a market for "jailbreaking" the glasses to bypass this feature has emerged. The effectiveness of Meta's recent measures is still under evaluation.
