Meta's smart glasses, branded under Ray-Ban, are at the center of a growing privacy debate. The devices, intended to blend into daily life, have drawn criticism for covert recording and misuse, leading to the nickname "pervert glasses" and reviving concerns similar to those surrounding Google Glass. These issues escalated after Swedish media reported reviewers were instructed to examine deeply personal material captured by the glasses, raising questions about data access.

In response to these privacy concerns, Meta has been granted a patent for hardware-based privacy controls. This technology could allow devices, including augmented reality glasses, to shut off sensors physically. Such a "kill switch" would offer a more tangible and reassuring privacy measure compared to software-based settings, which have reportedly been bypassed. While the patent does not guarantee a product, it signals Meta's recognition that design alone cannot solve privacy issues inherent in discreet recording technology.
