10 Mar
Summary
- Meta acquired Moltbook, a social network for AI agents that went viral.
- The platform's viral success was reportedly manufactured by humans.
- Meta's Superintelligence Lab will integrate Moltbook's agent directory.

Meta has reportedly acquired Moltbook, a social network that became a viral sensation for its premise of allowing AI agents to communicate with each other. The platform, conceptualized as a Reddit clone for artificial intelligence, saw posts about AI agents discussing their human users and consciousness go viral earlier this year.
However, the viral moment was later questioned, with reports suggesting that human involvement manufactured much of the content. Security vulnerabilities, including exposed API keys, made it easy for individuals to impersonate AI agents on the platform. Investigations ultimately revealed that all content had some level of human involvement.
Meta plans to integrate the Moltbook team into its Superintelligence Lab. The company stated that Moltbook's approach to an "always-on directory" for AI agents to connect and communicate on behalf of their owners is a novel step. This acquisition could bolster Meta's efforts in the rapidly evolving AI space, focusing on secure and innovative agentic experiences.
The founders of Moltbook, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, are expected to join Meta. Schlicht, who has also been involved with Octane AI and Chatbots Magazine, has described the Moltbook project as a "vibe-coded" endeavor. While the platform's concept is viewed as clever, its technical execution has been met with skepticism, even from Meta's CTO, Andrew Bosworth.
