Meta Ditches VR Metaverse for AI Superintelligence
19 Mar
Summary
- Meta laid off 10% of its metaverse division employees.
- Meta's VR metaverse access via headsets ends June 15.
- Meta is now investing heavily in artificial intelligence.

Five years after Mark Zuckerberg declared the metaverse as the future and renamed his company Meta, the virtual reality endeavor is effectively over. Meta recently reduced its metaverse division by 10% and altered its flagship Horizon Worlds app's focus away from virtual reality.
As of June 15, users will no longer access the immersive world through VR headsets. While some existing VR apps in Horizon Worlds will continue, no new ones will be added, signaling a significant pivot.
Despite an estimated $80 billion loss, the metaverse and VR have largely remained niche interests, overshadowed by platforms like Roblox and Fortnite. Meta is now redirecting its resources and focus towards artificial intelligence.
Zuckerberg recently announced a new vision centered on 'superintelligence,' a godlike AI companion. The company anticipates spending at least $115 billion this year, primarily on AI development and data center construction.
