Meta Pulls Plug on Messenger.com in 2026
19 Feb
Summary
- Messenger.com will cease to exist starting April 2026.
- Users will be redirected to Facebook.com/messages for web access.
- Deactivated Facebook account users must use the mobile app.

Meta is discontinuing its standalone Messenger website, messenger.com, effective April 2026. Following this change, users attempting to access messenger.com will be automatically redirected to facebook.com/messages for continued messaging on their computers.
Individuals who use Messenger without a Facebook account will need to rely solely on the Messenger mobile application. Chat history can be restored on any platform using a previously created backup PIN, with options to reset the PIN if forgotten.
This decision follows the earlier shutdown of Messenger's desktop applications for Windows and Mac. These changes allow Meta to streamline its services and reduce operational expenses by maintaining fewer platforms. Messenger, initially launched as 'Facebook Chat' in 2008, evolved into a standalone service, but Meta has recently begun integrating it back into the main Facebook app.
