A significant upgrade to Melbourne's public transport payment system begins on Monday, allowing commuters to use contactless bank cards or smart devices. This trial will be rolled out at 56 train stations across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Initially, passengers on the Craigieburn, Upfield, Ballarat, and Seymour lines will benefit from this new tap-and-go functionality. The trial, scheduled for March and April, is a crucial step in identifying any technical issues before wider implementation.
This initiative is part of a substantial $1.7 billion overhaul of the existing myki system. Public Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams stated that the trial aims to ensure the technology's reliability across the entire network, ultimately making travel quicker and more convenient for passengers.
