Matter's Joint Fabric: One Network, All Platforms
17 Jun
Summary
- Matter 1.6 introduces Joint Fabric for a single shared network.
- Devices will be controllable by any authorized platform seamlessly.
- New spec also adds full NFC setup and Thermostat Suggestions.

The Matter smart home standard is set to introduce a significant feature called Joint Fabric in its 1.6 specification, announced this week at the Connectivity Standards Alliance's Unify conference. This update enables a single, shared Matter network managed collaboratively by multiple ecosystems. Devices added to this unified network will be controllable by any authorized platform, including Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. This eliminates the previous cumbersome process of sharing devices across different apps, allowing for setup once and control everywhere.
Matter 1.6 also brings quality-of-life improvements, such as full NFC setup, allowing users to tap to pair devices and even before powering them on. Additionally, Thermostat Suggestions standardizes how thermostats communicate across ecosystems, enabling intelligent handling of automated requests and user preferences. These enhancements address interoperability issues that have been a roadblock for Matter since its 2022 launch.
Joint Fabric represents an evolution of Matter's multi-admin capabilities, aiming to provide a more seamless experience for users managing smart homes with multiple platforms. While a previous feature, Fabric Sync in Matter 1.4, offered sharing with single authorization, it still required separate networks per platform. Joint Fabric consolidates control into a single network, placing user control at the forefront. The adoption timeline for this feature by various ecosystems remains a point of interest.
