Matter 1.5.1: Smarter Cameras, Better Streaming
31 Mar
Summary
- Matter 1.5.1 optimizes camera streaming for reduced bandwidth.
- New update supports HEIC images and HLS/DASH streaming.
- Pan-tilt-zoom cameras gain improved movement features.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has launched Matter 1.5.1, a significant update building on last November's Matter 1.5. This release focuses on enhancing camera and video doorbell functionalities.
The most impactful feature is the more efficient camera streaming. This allows devices to simultaneously deliver multiple video streams, each optimized for its intended use. For instance, a video recorder might receive a high-resolution feed for archiving, while phones and tablets get a lower-resolution stream designed for mobile viewing.
Furthermore, Matter 1.5.1 integrates support for HEIC image formats, offering superior quality with smaller file sizes compared to JPEGs. It also adopts HLS and DASH streaming protocols, increasing compatibility with modern cloud and media platforms. Advanced capabilities for pan-tilt-zoom cameras include improved positioning and movement, while doorbells can now play custom chimes and trigger automations.
