Firewall Failure Sparks Data Theft Lawsuit

Fintech firm Marquis has informed its customers of its intent to pursue compensation from its firewall provider, SonicWall. Marquis alleges that a ransomware attack in August 2025, which resulted in the theft of customer personal and financial data, was facilitated by an earlier data breach at SonicWall. This earlier breach, disclosed in September 2025, reportedly exposed crucial security credentials related to customers' firewalls.

According to Marquis's internal investigation, hackers obtained information about its firewall during the SonicWall breach. This information, including configuration data and credentials, was allegedly used to circumvent Marquis's defenses. SonicWall, however, has requested evidence from Marquis to substantiate these claims, stating they have found no connection between their security incident and ongoing ransomware attacks.

Marquis, which serves hundreds of banks and credit unions by visualizing their customer data, began notifying affected individuals last month. The stolen data includes personal information, financial details, and Social Security numbers of hundreds of thousands of U.S. banking customers. SonicWall acknowledged in October 2025 that its cloud backup service for firewall files had been accessed by unauthorized actors, affecting all customers using the service.
