Malware Data Stacks Higher Than Skyscrapers
14 May
Summary
- vx-underground has 30 terabytes of malware data.
- VirusTotal holds 31 petabytes of malware samples.
- VirusTotal's data stack rivals the Burj Khalifa's height.

Malware research group vx-underground announced it possesses roughly 30 terabytes of malware source code. This substantial archive is part of critical repositories used by cybersecurity firms and AI researchers for training detection models.
Comparison with VirusTotal, a service that scans files for malware, reveals even larger data scales. VirusTotal has accumulated approximately 31 petabytes of user-contributed malware samples. A petabyte is about 1,000 times larger than a terabyte.
Visualizing these quantities using standard 1-terabyte hard drives, vx-underground's data would stack 30 inches high. VirusTotal's 31 petabytes, however, would create a stack of 2,645 feet. This height nearly matches the Burj Khalifa at 2,722 feet and is more than double the Eiffel Tower's 1,083 feet.
