Mac's Edge Light Boosts Video Call Lighting Automatically

In the coming months, Mac users can look forward to an upgrade that will significantly improve the lighting quality during video calls. A new feature called Edge Light, spotted in the latest macOS Tahoe 26.2 Beta 2, is designed to enhance video call illumination by creating an illuminated border around the video window.

The Edge Light system is engineered to automatically adjust its brightness and color temperature based on the user's ambient lighting conditions and their position within the frame. By utilizing the Mac's Neural Engine, Edge Light can monitor the user's face, size, and location to optimize the lighting for the best possible video quality, even in dark rooms.

Beyond the automatic adjustments, users will also have the ability to manually tweak the color of the Edge Light, making it either cooler or warmer to suit their preferences. The feature is confirmed to work with popular video conferencing apps like FaceTime and Zoom, with support for additional apps expected in the future.

The new Edge Light functionality will be available on all Mac models powered by Apple silicon processors, which debuted in 2020. However, a few exceptions include the 2019 MacBook Pro and Mac Pro models. Macs from 2024 or later are also expected to gain an additional feature that automatically turns on the Edge Light when the user is in a dark environment.
