MacBook Neo Outshines Windows Laptops Under $600
9 Apr
Summary
- MacBook Neo offers premium build and solid performance for $599.
- Windows alternatives reviewed struggled with build and screen quality.
- Neo's single-core performance surpasses all tested Windows laptops.

Last month's arrival of the MacBook Neo, starting at $599, has reportedly put Windows laptop manufacturers in a difficult position. This ultra-portable, all-aluminum device features an iPhone chip and offers impressive build quality for its price point, a stark contrast to typical budget Windows laptops.
Tests of Windows alternatives, including the Asus Vivobook, Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x, and Acer Aspire 14 AI, revealed significant shortcomings. Despite some offering more RAM and faster storage on paper, they were criticized for their cheap-feeling construction, dim displays, and poor audio quality.
The MacBook Neo also demonstrated superior single-core performance, outperforming even the Acer Aspire 14 AI with its Intel Core Ultra 7 chip. While the Windows laptops have some advantages like more ports or touchscreen displays, they consistently fall short in overall quality-of-life features compared to the Neo.
Apple's advantage stems from vertical integration, combining hardware, software, and its own chips. PC makers are challenged to improve their budget offerings without compromising on essential components like screens and speakers or increasing prices significantly, making the MacBook Neo a dominant force in its price segment.
