Summary
- M5 chip offers significant speed boost over previous models.
- Starting storage doubled to 512GB, with twice the speed.
- Battery life exceeds 17 hours for typical office work.

Apple's newest MacBook Air introduces the M5 chip, marking a significant leap in performance for the consumer laptop line. This upgrade provides a 10-20% speed increase over the M4 chip and makes the M5 model between 75% and 108% faster than the M1 MacBook Air, surpassing even 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro models in benchmarks.
The 13.6-inch model starts at £1,099 with 512GB of storage, doubling the previous base amount and offering twice the speed with its new SSD. Alongside faster Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 via the N1 chip, the M5 Air retains its renowned battery life, reliably lasting over 17 hours for daily tasks and around 10 hours for intensive use.
Externally, the MacBook Air remains unchanged, featuring its signature thin, lightweight recycled aluminum body and a crisp 13.6-inch display with a 60Hz refresh rate. Environmental consciousness is also highlighted, with 55% recycled materials used in its construction and a battery designed for over 1,000 charge cycles.
While the Air excels as a premium notebook, Apple's lower-cost MacBook Neo challenges its position for general computing. Nevertheless, the M5 MacBook Air's combination of build quality, performance, and battery endurance sets a high standard in the premium laptop market.
